What Would Buddy Do?
We just might have to burn this m*therf*cker down
Posted on September 30th, 2007 at 6:17 am by Cheesesteak Hoagie

burn it all downThis is going to get a lot more agitated/ anxious/ loco before it’s all over, isn’t it.

So the Mets and Phils do the simultaneity thing at 1 pm, which means for the first time in I can’t remember how many years, I will watch a sporting event OTHER THAN THE NFL during live NFL games. This should produce a solid three hours of anxiety for the entire Philadelphia region (and about a third of the New York region, sorry Mets fans)*. With any luck, the Phils and Marlins will cooperate with our collective inability to process stress and each score 11 runs in the first inning.

I find this scenario very doubtful. We’ll be watching to the final pitch on both games. (I’m in Jersey right now — fresh from Sweden! — and will have both games easily accessibly.) Ugh.

Put a bounty on Peter King!
Posted on September 28th, 2007 at 2:11 am by Cheesesteak Hoagie

before he lost the weightIn all honesty, I can’t believe it took me this long to get a bounty on Peter King.

I’m not gonna dog King for his increasingly played out and lame MMQB column (which used to be required reading but is now two years past its use-by date), his dweebishly mundane descriptions of commuting (yawn), or even the self-important patriotism of publishing the letters from the soldier in Iraq (yes yes, Peter, you’re doing a great thing for AMERICA here). Nope, I’m getting down on Peter King for being exactly the uptight white sportswriter that we thought he was.

That’s mos def a KILLSHOT
Posted on September 27th, 2007 at 4:45 pm by Cheesesteak Hoagie

Whilst we endeavour to discuss the Birds exclusively, we do have a special spot in our football hearts for the KILLSHOT, the play by which a defender ends a game by purposely injuring a quarterback.

The video that PFT posted of the Vince Wilfork hit on J.P. Losman is pretty damning. We hate to point fingers, but this sure looked like a KILLSHOT.

Two months later, Bracegate finally over
Posted on September 27th, 2007 at 7:43 am by Cheesesteak Hoagie

a braceless yellow DunavinAnd who said that the Bracegate line of questioning from this summer was just blathermonkey rubbish?

(Besides me, of course.)

Days after obliterating the Detroit Lions’ secondary and throwing (literally) a perfect game in a 56-21 win, Donovan McNabb admitted that yes, he had shed his pesky knee brace, and yes, he did feel better without it:

Good guys score many touchdowns, hurt bad guys’ feelings in awkwardly outfitted return to form
Posted on September 24th, 2007 at 3:07 pm by Cheesesteak Hoagie

the view from SRO

Well that all worked out quite well!

In a game and atmosphere at the Linc that could have been absolutely toxic (and there was apparently a smattering of boos for McNabb during the introductions, but we were still walking into the stadium at that point and didn’t hear them), the Eagles got weird on the Lions and convinced every last one of us that thinks we know what’s going to happen in these games THAT WE HAVE NO IDEA AT ALL. NONE. I thought the spread was absurd when I saw it (I thought the Birds would struggle to win this game). I obviously have NO IDEA WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.

I don’t want to take all the credit for the win, but this was my first trip to the Linc since January 2005. So it was either me or the hideous uniforms (and yes, I thought they were hideous, though they didn’t look terrible on the fans…the yellow and blue goes better with jeans than it did with those white pants) that powered the Eagles to victory yesterday. Or Donovan McNabb’s overwhelming desire for revenge against his many naysayers. One of those.

Can I wear an Andre Waters shirt to the Linc tomorrow (or is it too weird)?

Andre Waters Throwback Jersey

I need a little help from the peanut gallery on this one.

Less than a year ago a very good friend got married and gave each of the guys in the wedding party a throwback jersey as a gift. This was extremely solid of him. No questions asked.

The Overwhelming T.O.-ness of Dunavin
Posted on September 22nd, 2007 at 8:33 am by Cheesesteak Hoagie

perhaps a driveway press conference would be goodSo he isn’t doing sit-ups in his driveway. And he hasn’t tried to punch any of the over-the-hill defensive ends in the locker room (would that be Kearse at this point?). But it sure seems like Donovan McNabb’s behavior this past week was at least reminiscent of the antics of Mr. Terrell Owens.

What else can you say about a guy who’s inventing his own media sh*tstorm at the moment when his team needs exactly the opposite thereof? (Read the rest of this story.)

Dave Spadaro begs Eagles fans not to boo
Posted on September 21st, 2007 at 2:18 pm by Cheesesteak Hoagie

Adorable piece from Dave Spadaro on the Birds site yesterday. Under the auspices of encouraging fans to support the team through their 0-2 adversity and suggesting that the fans bear some responsibility for helping the Eagles to win footabll games, Spadaro all but begs us not to boo the team on the afternoon of its 75th anniversary celebration.

Of course, Spadaro isn’t crazy. He’s a good soldier, so he knows he has to acknowledge the proclivities of the fanbase:

When the Eagles are introduced to begin the game, let them know that you are behind each and every one of them, and that you need a win just as much as they need a win. We’re all in this together, remember. The players, coaches and entire Eagles organization wants to win every week just as much as you. You don’t agree with every move the team makes and that’s fine.

Dunavin isn’t wrong (he’s just a sensitive little emotional flower and he should please stop talking right now)
Posted on September 21st, 2007 at 8:37 am by Cheesesteak Hoagie

needs and feelings, puppy dogs and ice creamAw jeez, Dunavin. Was this really such an awesome idea? Really? We know that you can’t control the timing of the broadcast of the HBO interview, but you had to know that people were going to freak out the moment you started talking about race (more on that in a moment). And despite the fact that every other blogger stole my thunder on this one, let me also say: the timing on this could not have been worse (unless you stink it up on Sunday and they were to broadcast during the 0-3 week instead of the 0-2 week).

Assuming that this whole thing is a terrible PR mess and Dunavin did himself no favors with his comments (this is a statement of FACT, not OPINION), a few things are worth noting:

Getting pushed around like it was 2003!
Posted on September 18th, 2007 at 2:27 pm by Cheesesteak Hoagie

at least rocca hasnt screwed up with the holdingSo we’ve all heard this story before.

Many moons ago, back in the days before TO and the trip to the Thuper Bowl, the Eagles used to grind out wins with their QB, a feisty defense, some talent at TE and RB — despite a completely overmatched WR corps. If last night’s game is any indication of a larger trend, it sure looks like this team needs to start thinking about winning in the 2003 style and not the 2004 style, because their WRs are getting pushed around like Trash and Stinkston.
