The most exciting news in the NFL this week doesn’t actually have to do with football, but rather my consumption thereof. The oft-maligned-and-full-of-crap-but-still-essential-despite-it-all Profootballtalk.com has finally upgraded their site.
And by “upgrade” I mean “added all the features that every version of freeing blogging and content management software has offered for years.” While we could complain that this is about three years late, but instead we’ll focus on why it’s acutally pretty awesome:
1. Rumor mill has an RSS feed (!!!!!!). This is the sort of move that will kill Mike Florio’s page views but keep his actual customers happy. I know, it seems ridiculous that any site that popular wouldn’t offer feeds in 2007. Lunacy. Who’d believe it. And I’m sure plenty of people are as addicted as I am to PFT, and would pound F5 on Rumor Mill a couple times a day. It certainly wasn’t an ideal scenario, but the content is so good that it’s been worth the extra clicks and page loads. Finally, no more extra clicks and page loads; we can just check the updates from afar and click through on the interesting ones (that is, the ones that aren’t ads for Sprint phones or his Youtube videos). Here’s the link. And there was much rejoicing.
2. Individual entries now have links. This makes it a lot easier to send articles around and for the nerdliner blogertariat to post links directly to relevant stories (this is me looking in my own direction). Again, ridiculous that this didn’t exist before.
3. Finally, we can comment! Prior to allowing comments, Florio could post completely ridiculous conjecture without any sort of accountability. Sure, the nerdliner blogeratariat could give him some grief, but who reads my random crap? But with the comments turned on, rational heads can prevail a bit more easily. I’ll say I’m actually proud of the Eagles fans who’ve been posting in the comments; instead of parroting the panic and doom of the mouth-breathing primates on WIP, they’ve actually been pretty bright and composed. Good on ya, Philly!
