Despite the fact that Profootballtalk.com is one of our favorite NFL sites — at least in so part due to its delightful penchant for rumormongering — we’re going to need to put a bounty on PFT editor Mike Florio.

Seriously, we typically enjoy the ridiculous tabloid speculation coming out of PFT (it’s like Drudge Report for the NFL), but we don’t like it when we think he’s picking on our favorite team. In two postings since the Trotter release, he’s tried to invent imaginary scandals based on (a) alleged insider info from the locker room or (b) his own fantastical creativity:

All sorts of emotional farewells and tearful goodbyes at the Novacare Complex attended Jeremiah Trotter’s last day at work yesterday. I didn’t get the e-mail about the Farewell Drinks, but I do feel like I got all sorts of needs and/ or feelings from the football TV show yesterday.

This was definitely a heckuva PR stunt. They let Trotter give a farewell address (with Dawk and Spikes standing by, no less!) and Andy Reid shared all manner of wistful memories about Trotter’s legacy with the team. And despite most of the vets expressing complete shock at the move, Trot played along and said he agreed with it (!):

“I agree with his decision, too,” Trotter said. “Obviously, I want to be here, but he’s making a decision that he feels is best for the team. That’s what this league is about; the turnover ratio is big every year. They’re always bringing in someone to try to better the team. Who knows what the future holds, but . . . now it’s my time. I understand why he did it - I know he didn’t want to do it - and that means a lot to me.”

Asked whether he thought Reid should rethink the decision, Trotter said:

Man, that is some cold sh*t.

I’ll admit to being fairly shocked that the Eagles cut Trotter. I thought there was a chance he might lose his starting job, but cutting the guy whose return and resurgence in 2004 pushed the defense into the Super Bowl? The guy who so famously feuded and then made up with Coach Reid after the dark interregnum of Trotter’s Redskin years (ah, the wistful memories of the green #54 shirts with “Trotter” transformed into “Traitor”)?

Certainly very few of the local blathermonkeys saw this coming, with the possible exception of G. Cobb, who posted a very curious comment on his blog a week and change ago. Semi-hilariously, a number of blathermonkeys decided that Monday would be “Guess the roster/ doesn’t look like there are many hard choices for Andy Reid to make” day (see link below). Only Delaware Online seemed to be on the case at all, noting Trot’s absence from practice.
